People love to be prepared for disasters, especially when served with a companion. This was followed by an anti-gun platform that filed a petition to prevent Nat Geo from airing that episode, and things started to get worse after that. Given this backlash, Nat Geo finally agreed to withdraw the episode, and even Yaeger's video was also deleted. The last nail in the coffin came in the form of Sandy Hook shooter Adama Lanza, who mentioned that he considered himself a doomsday preparer.
A petition was soon filed to delete the series, which Nat Geo did considering the sensitivity of the situation. The show was abruptly canceled and the channel could risk everything, given that the gun incident caught the attention of fans. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 26.2 percent of Americans age 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. It is irresponsible for National Geographic Channel and any other media to promote extreme views of groups or individuals on the margins of society for entertainment purposes, especially when a common element of such a group involves the purchase and storage of weapons and ammunition for the purpose of defending oneself against a theory or scenario that does not yet exist.
It feeds paranoia and blurs the line between reality and fiction. It exploits members of society who have trouble distinguishing between reality and fiction by adding weight to the fears they already have and educates them on how to deal with preparing for the fears that only exist in their heads. The series can be quite insensitive in portraying the use of weapons among children and, although Nat Geo has taken steps to provide disclaimers that undermine the actions of the issue, it was obviously not enough. While I appreciate that each individual must take responsibility for himself and that each of us can choose what we see on television, I argue that if someone suffers from a mental health problem, he may not be aware that watching a program of this nature could potentially push him towards an action that he or she might not otherwise be able to drink.
National Geographic Channel, PLEASE remove this program from your schedule. In his quest to document life on the sidelines, he is adding fuel to a growing fire and the potential consequences are devastating. At the end of each episode, NatGeo experts gave each preparer a score of 1 to 100, rating the quality and likely effectiveness of their proper pre-planning. Doomsday preparers are those who believe that an apocalyptic scenario or social collapse is imminent and therefore spend a good part of their time preparing to survive.
Honestly, I think most preparers would give a simpler answer to the question of 'why do preparers prepare?. So where have all the Doomsday Preparers vanished? Because preparers respect your privacy, it's hard to know where everyone is right now. Just days after appearing on National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers TV show, a Tennessee preparer has been declared Mentally Defective and his guns have been seized by the government.
